Regina is the capital city of Saskatchewan and you can’t forget it, there are government signs and buildings everywhere. Kind of like the way that Alberta has a battle between Edmonton and Calgary, Saskatchewan has a rivalry between Regina and Saskatoon. Based on my visits, Regina seems to be a bit grittier than Saskatoon.
You CAN'T get lost here. The streets are all arranged in a grid with numbers. It makes it so easy for someone visiting to get around.
The University of Regina has a big presence in the city but I really liked the new First Nations University building because it’s a big glass teepee. It seems like a very great way to combine old traditions with modern training.
Regina is one of those cities where the timing of your visit is everything. Ive been in June when the flowers are blooming and the whole city seems to be eating outside on patios and having fun. But ive also been there in late November when its’ so dark and gloomy.
You absolutely MUST try to catch a Roughriders football game.
The CFL is so big in western Canada and Regina might be the city with the most diehard fans. Seriously, on game day the whole city is wearing green and the pregame parties are all over the place. And the stadium itself is a perfect sports experience. The stadium is pretty simple but the fans are completely awesome to watch. People yell and scream and cheer the whole time. If you bring kids you might want to ask which sections are a bit more family friendly. I never saw anything too wild (in fact people are so nice here) but theres a fair amount of drinking and locker room talk in some sections.
